[MTV] Why a migrated Windows VM reboot multiple times on its first boot?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • OpenShift Container Platform 4.1x
  • OpenShift Virtualization 4.1x
  • Migration Toolkit 2.x

Issue

When migrating a Windows VM from VMware to OCP-V the VM is restarted multiple times before it is booted.

Resolution

This is intentional for MTV/v2v Windows migration, for Windows there are several first-boot scripts (fixing static ip, installing guest agent,) and after each script, the VM reboots
This is also mentioned in the virt-v2v page

Converting a Windows guest
N.B. Windows may reboot 4 or more times the first time after conversion. This is required to install the required drivers, guest agents, remove VMware Tools, and configure the network. Take care not to interrupt the automatic driver installation process when logging in to the guest for the first time, as this may prevent the guest from subsequently booting correctly.
