Kdump service takes a long time to start

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7

Issue

  • systemctl start kdump.service hangs
  • kdump service takes a long time to start

Root Cause

  • When restarting the kdump service via systemctl (start|restart) kdump.service, all changes to the file /etc/kdump.conf need to be incorporated into the kdump initramfs. While the system is writing the new initramfs for kdump, the terminal will appear hung. This can take several minutes.
