RED HAT INSIGHTS ON RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX (RHEL)

Guidance for installing Insights on RHEL systems managed by Red Hat Subscription Manager (RHSM)

Red Hat Insights is a Software-as-a-Service offering that provides actionable intelligence about your Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, helping to identify and address operational and vulnerability risks before an issue results in downtime.

Data and application security

To perform an analysis of your environment, small pieces of system metadata are sent to the Red Hat Insights service. Learn more about how Red Hat reduces security risks when transmitting, processing, and analyzing this data.

  1. 1

    Prerequisites

    • If you don't have a Red Hat account, create one now so that you can log in to Red Hat Insights. This is the same account that you use to read a knowledge base article or download Red Hat software. If your organization has a Red Hat account, contact your Organization Administrator to be added to the existing account.
    • If your system cannot be subscribed to Red Hat Subscription Management, see the Client Configuration documentation for authentication procedures that must be completed prior to Insights registration.
    • If you have a web-based proxy between your system and the Internet, you can configure the insights-client to connect through it. For more information, refer to How to access Red Hat Insights through a firewall/Proxy .
  2. 2

    Connect (register and install)

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) v8.6, v9.0, or laterRed Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) v8.6, v9.0, or later

Remote host configuration (rhc) is an optional configuration tool that simplifies connecting to Insights. Remote host configuration also enables infrastructureless remediation so that you can fix the system issues that Insights finds directly from cloud.redhat.com.

    1. Connect using rhc (remote host configuration) client:

      [root@server ~]# rhc connect
    2. Update the rhc client package:

      [root@server ~]# dnf -y update rhc

    3. Install Ansible to enable additional operations:

      [root@server ~]# dnf -y install rhc-worker-playbook ansible-core

Read the Customer Portal article about rhc to learn more.

RED HAT INSIGHTS ON RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX (RHEL) IN THE PUBLIC CLOUD

Guidance for installing Insights on RHEL systems hosted on a Red Hat Certified Cloud and Service Provider (CCSP)

  1. 1

    Prerequisites

In order to register a cloud-based system to Insights, first you need to have a Red Hat single sign-on (SSO) account. If you subscribed to Red Hat Enterprise Linux on-demand through a public cloud marketplace but never interacted with Red Hat directly, you can easily create an account now.

Create a new Red Hat account

  2. 2

    Connect

Existing RHEL systems managed by Red Hat Subscription Management (RHSM), Satellite, or Cloud Access

If you are using RHSM, register all systems with Red Hat for updates and to resolve software dependencies. (Satellite users can skip this step.)

    [root@server ~]# subscription-manager register --auto-attach

Install the client package on each system. If you’re using RHEL 8 or above, you can skip this step because the Insights client is installed by default.

    [root@server ~]# yum install insights-client

    Register the system to Insights.

    [root@server ~]# insights-client --register

Existing RHEL systems purchased from a marketplace and managed by Red Hat

To connect RHEL 8.5 and newer systems to Insights, try the new Red Hat remote host configuration (rhc) utility. See Remote Host Configuration and Management and the article titled How to register a Red Hat Enterprise Linux system running on AWS to Insights.

ou can deploy Red Hat Insights on an existing Red Hat Enterprise Linux system v8.4 or earlier that is managed by Red Hat, including on-demand, hourly systems purchased from cloud service provider marketplaces, as well as systems deployed from Red Hat Gold Images in AWS. Register systems to RHSM for updates and to resolve software dependencies.

To get the full benefit of direct remediation using Insights with RHEL version 8.4 or later, install additional packages.

    [root@server ~]# yum install rhc-worker-playbook ansible-core

Use Remote Host Configuration (rhc) to register your RHEL version 8.4 or later system to Insights for RHEL.

    [root@server ~]# rhc connect

RED HAT INSIGHTS ON RED HAT OPENSHIFT CONTAINER PLATFORM

Red Hat Insights continuously analyzes and assesses all remote health data from connected clusters. Results of the analysis are anonymized and provided to various teams to improve product quality and reliability, support efficiency, and increase operational and cost efficiency through Insights services available within the Hybrid Cloud Console.

Red Hat Hybrid Cloud Console is a set of managed services for installing, operating and upgrading your Red Hat OpenShift v4.x clusters. The console supports installing Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and helps you manage both on-premise installations as well as Red Hat-managed clusters. Hybrid Cloud Console also provides landing pages for Insights services for OpenShift, available under the Red Hat Insights section of the navigation panel.

Prerequisites

To use Insights services with OpenShift you need:

  • One or more installed OpenShift Container Platform instances, version 4.2 or higher.
  • A Red Hat customer account with organization administrator access so that you can add sources to cost management and modify notification behaviors.
  • A supported web browser. For details about web browser requirements, see the Browser Support link at the bottom of the cloud platform landing page.

To get started with Red Hat Insights:

Available Insights services for OpenShift include:

Advisor

The advisor service offers proactive recommendations based on Red Hat experience with running OpenShift as a managed service, in addition to input from Red Hat solution architects and support, and based on machine learning models on top of OpenShift analytics data. Each recommendation provides actionable steps to prevent or resolve issues that are already present, including detailed information such as severity and category of the issue. Insights recommendations are integrated in OpenShift Web Console and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Manager.

Subscriptions

The Subscription service provides reporting of Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform subscription usage information. Subscriptions uses data available from Red Hat internal subscription services, in addition to data from Red Hat OpenShift reporting tools, to show aggregated cluster usage data in the context of the capacity of the Red Hat OpenShift subscription profile.

If you are using Red Hat OpenShift as the data collection tool, the steps you must take depend on multiple factors, including your installed versions, whether clusters are connected or disconnected, and the operating system of the clusters.

For Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform v4.1 or later with Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS, data is reported to Hybrid Cloud Console through remote health monitoring. To enable subscription service reporting, simply confirm that the monitoring tool is active. Read the Subscription Service documentation to learn more.

Cost management

The cost management service helps you understand and track costs for clouds and containers. You can access the cost management service from the console home page by navigating to OpenShift > Cost Management > Overview.

Vulnerability

The Red Hat Insights vulnerability for OpenShift service provides information about the exposure of your Red Hat-deployed OpenShift clusters to common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs). CVEs are security exposures or flaws that are identified in publicly-released software packages.

Note: The vulnerability service provides CVE data on the infrastructure of your OpenShift clusters, not the workloads that are running within the clusters.

Additional services

Red Hat Insights is your connector to additional OpenShift features and services integrated either with Hybrid Cloud Console or the OpenShift product. This includes handling of cluster ownership changes, updates to your pull secret, and access to Red Hat content for your build pipeline.

Click Documentation in the OpenShift navigation panel to find out more about managing clusters and monitoring your OpenShift cluster health with Insights advisor.
