Why does my Matrox G200 no longer work in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, Update 6 or 7?

Symptom:
Certain Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems that use an onboard Matrox G200 video chip with PCI ID = 102b:0522 have X window manager (GUI video) that do not come up after updating or using Update 6 or 7.
