Announcing the Beta release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6

Updated -

We are pleased to announce the availability of the beta release of Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® 8.6., which provides a flexible and stable foundation to support hybrid cloud innovation.

The Beta release of RHEL 8.6 offers:

  • Web console support for Smart Card Authentication with Sudo and SSH: leverage smart card authentication credentials when performing administrative functions and accessing remote hosts through the RHEL web console. Simplify administration and compliance by transparently utilizing digital certificates stored on smart cards.

  • Stratis Storage support in the web console (technology preview): provides users with the ability to utilize the RHEL web console to create, configure and manage Stratis Storage pools and filesystems.

  • Passthrough host devices to virtual machines using the web console: allows users to passthrough host PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) and USB devices to virtual machines using the web console. This functionality provides the ability to make these devices present on the host system and available for use within a virtual machine.

  • HA Cluster System Role: provides automated tooling to create consistent and stable RHEL HA Cluster solutions. Organizations can now easily create an HA Cluster utilizing prescriptive use case scenarios, configurations, and topology recommendations. The HA Cluster RHEL System Role, previously available as a technology preview, moves to a supported status in RHEL 8.6 and 9.

  • System Role for web console: automates the installation and configuration of the RHEL web console including specifying which web console packages should be installed, starting and enabling the web console, and optionally configuring settings such as the idle timeout.

  • Firewall System Role: provides organizations with the ability to automate the management of their firewall configuration. The new Firewall System Role feature supports RHEL 7, 8, and 9 managed nodes.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 Beta also provides developers with a simplified experience for both access and application development. Support for the following AppStreams is now available:

  • Perl 5.32
  • PHP 8.0
  • LLVM Toolset update
  • Rust Toolset update
