Announcing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.9

Updated -

We are excited to announce the general availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.9.

Over the past six plus years RHEL 7 has become the standard for thousands of customers worldwide who rely on the Control, Confidence and Freedom it delivers. RHEL 7 set in motion key innovations that we now see across the industry and that Red Hat continues to build on in RHEL 8.

New in RHEL 7.9
RHEL 7.9 includes a new SCAP profile for the Center for Information Security (CIS) benchmark. This provides configuration guidance and reporting to streamline compliance activities and reduce overhead for organizations following the Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmark.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Life Cycle
With this last minor release, RHEL 7 enters Maintenance Support 2. During Maintenance Support 2, Red Hat-defined Critical and Important impact Security Advisories (RHSAs) and selected (at Red Hat discretion) Urgent Priority Bug Fix Advisories (RHBAs) may be released as they become available. Other errata advisories may be delivered as appropriate.

While this is not an Extended Update Support (EUS) release, it provides the same level of maintenance as EUS until end of maintenance for RHEL 7 on June 30, 2024. This release will be supported with kpatch which enables IT teams to update their RHEL 7 kernels “live” without requiring a system restart. Please note that this release is the final planned minor update to RHEL 7. This will also be the final time that Red Hat provides media kits (installer ISO images) for system installation.

Upgrading to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8
Customers are advised to plan their upgrades to RHEL 8 at this time to allow for the longest possible support path.
A Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription gives users access to all active versions of RHEL. To facilitate moving to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, Red Hat offers tools which streamline and simplify upgrades. You can find more information about in-place upgrades for RHEL 7 here.
